Message from the Editors

Editors are faced with a difficult problem -- just what to include and what to leave out. In approaching the creation of this document, we faced a different problem -- how to include as much as possible. When the world is in flux, the best way to capture the nature of change is to open our collective eyes as wide as possible, share our experiences, and think about new directions.

So we chose another model for this project. A model that is better known in the software world -- open source. This is an open source document. That is why we created it on the Internet and are distributing it on the Internet. Here are the terms that apply:

  • You can make as many copies of this document as you like and redistribute it to whomever you like.

  • You can examine the the code, in essence, the basic ideas of the people who contibuted to the document. You can listen to exactly what they said to us and interpret their ideas in your own way.

  • You have the right to improve on the ideas presented here. Feel free to elaborate, debate, or depart from what has been said and share what you have created with others.

This is a document about the future. Just as we cannot own the future, we cannot own these ideas, their implications, their future.
